Spanish Teaching Methodology

Our teaching methodology delivers a dynamic, personalized learning experience that integrates Spanish language skills with Nicaraguan and Latin American cultures, providing 100% Spanish instruction by certified ELE teachers. Classes occur in an immersive, Spanish-only environment, employing a participatory conversational approach that incorporates visual, auditory, and kinesthetic activities to engage all your senses in an effective direct learning process, particularly for beginner students. The curriculum emphasizes demonstration, practice, and real-world experience, with in-depth grammar explanations tailored for intermediate and advanced learners.

Class element and method

  • Functional Method: Follows the natural development of students’ abilities, integrating an active, participatory approach with formal teaching of grammar, vocabulary, oral communication, comprehension, reading, and writing as needed. All instruction is conducted 100% in Spanish by certified ELE teachers.

  • Purpose: To teach students to use Spanish effectively while fostering an appreciation for Latin American and Nicaraguan culture, ensuring engagement and interest throughout the course.

  • Proactive Responsive Flexible Strategy: Teachers prepare classes with defined student goals based on an evaluation of language abilities and knowledge, incorporating activity options to adapt to students’ physical, mental, and emotional states and environmental circumstances.

  • Multi-Sense Techniques and Resources: The SOL method employs participatory oral, physical, and written presentations, activities, and exercises using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic resources in a positive, supportive environment.

  • Standard Grammatical Structure: A progressive grammatical structure is reflected in teaching materials, exercises, and exams, divided among the six CEFR-aligned academic levels as appropriate.

  • Cultural Themes and Activities: Classes and afternoon activities (for the Immersion Course) integrate cultural themes of Nicaragua and Latin America. Through discussion and interaction, students gain confidence in communicating in Spanish on everyday topics and specific academic or professional interests.

Academic Structure

  • Customized Class Structure: Offers one-on-one or group classes limited to 1–4 students per instructor. Three competency levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced) are subdivided into six CEFR-aligned levels: A1 (Beginner), A2 (Advanced Beginner), B1 (Intermediate), B2 (Advanced Intermediate), C1 (Advanced), C2 (Conversational), with standardized definitions.

  • Level Placement: A first-day placement evaluation, including oral and written tests, assesses language skills, cultural knowledge, and personal interests to place students in the appropriate CEFR level (A1–C2). Absolute beginners discuss goals and expectations to tailor the experience.

  • Classwork and Assignments: Students complete in-class reading, writing, and oral practice, along with regular out-of-class assignments documented in written form, contributing to the evaluation of progress in competency and knowledge.

  • Evaluation System: Includes an entry evaluation to determine academic level, a final exam to assess competencies gained, and regular/pop quizzes throughout the program to guide learning. Weekly evaluations (based on 24 hours of instruction) consist of daily tests/quizzes (oral and written, 30%), daily writing assignments (30%), and a weekly written/oral exam (40%). A comprehensive exam is available every four weeks. A final report of hours completed and a numerical/letter grade is provided (A: 90–100%, B: 80–89.9%, C: 70–79.9%, D: 60–69.9%, F: <60%).

  • Basic Texts and Complementary Materials: Texts include, but are not limited to, “Gramática Práctica de Español para Extranjeros” by Sánchez/Martín/Matilla (5th ed., Sociedad General Española de Librería, SA, Madrid, Spain) and “Curso de Español para Extranjeros ELE”. Additionally, our professional teaching team—with over 20 years of experience—has carefully developed a set of 6 textbooks aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) standards. Each book is enriched with Nicaraguan and Latin American cultural content, offering students a rich and authentic perspective on the language.

Each concept textbook is complemented by a Student Workbook, specifically designed to allow students to apply grammar rules and language structures through guided writing activities and practical exercises. Students receive high-quality copies of the Student Workbook for class use. Both the full-color Grammar Textbook and Student Workbook are available for the symbolic price of $49 USD, making them an ideal long-term reference set. Additionally, the school creates in-house visual and audio materials, all included in the program cost, to provide a dynamic and immersive learning experience.
